Bringing the Afro-Iberian + Afro-Latino into the Spanish Language Classroom
About
our school
The Kinky Gazpacho Language School is an online platform dedicated to exploring the Spanish Language from a Black Perspective. A joint venture between Spanish linguist Dr. Manuel Malia and Black American author and cultural critic, Lori L. Tharps, the Kinky Gazpacho School was created to make language learning a lot more colorful.
The goal of The Kinky Gazpacho School is to teach Spanish in a way that reflects the Afro-Iberian and Afro Latino influence on the Spanish language and Hispanic culture more broadly.
Our hope is that with more inclusive teaching materials, Black students who traditionally have not seen themselves represented in Spanish language classrooms, will see themselves reflected in the history and culture of Spanish speaking countries, and therefore have a greater motivation to learn the language.
The Kinky Gazpacho School flips the script on the traditional language school curriculum and teaching methods. Not only do we emphasize speaking over memorizing grammar rules, we also center the Black Experience in the Spanish speaking world for all of our materials and content.
Currently all of our language learning resources can be found on the Teachers Pay Teachers platform. If you are a classroom teacher or homeschooling parent looking for resources to augment your Spanish lessons with inclusive language materials, please check out our materials on the TPT website.
And if there is a particular resource you’d like to see, please send us a request via the contact form below.
